Quizlet is an app and website that is designed to help you learn vocabulary. The structure is very simple. You sign 
up for a free account in the program and then start building vocabulary lists OR search in the thousands of lists others have already created. Once you build your list there are several different methods/games you can use to practice the vocabulary. You can go the traditional route and simply look at the word or definition, see if you can say it aloud and then flip the card and see if you are right. Then there are a few games, like matching or typing the words that make practicing more fun. To create a sort simply go to https://quizlet.com and then log in. If you don’t have an account, set one up for free. Click on the words “Create Study Set” at the top of the screen. Type in the title you’d like to call your vocabulary set. Then type the words you would like to use in your sort into the first column and the definitions into the second. You can even add a photo or audio bytes if you’d like. Finally click “Create” and walah! You have a new word set. If you want something even faster, try searching for the list you are looking for. You’d be surprised at how many sets have already been created by teachers like you using the same curriculum.
Simple Uses?
There are ALL kinds of ways to use this. The quizlet website provides lots of examples. Below are some ideas I’ve tried with my classes:
- Do math centers for an EDM lesson and use this as one of the centers to learn the new words in the unit.
- Bring this in for one of your word study activities and have the students practice the definitions to their words along with the spelling.
- In science or social studies have the students come up with the keywords for the unit and provide the definitions then gradually build a quizlet sort that they can study at home or as an extension to a lesson.
- Plug in high frequency words and have the students practice them as morning work
- Have students build their own lists of vocabulary words during reading and build personalized quizlet sets for themselves.
